I studied philosophy at St. John’s College and earned my Ph.D. at the University of Georgia. There, I studied evolutionary plant ecophysiology and conducted STEM education research. As a faculty member at Georgia Tech, I transformed intro bio labs and mentored graduate student teaching assistants. Since 2013, I’ve been privileged to teach at Gallaudet, the world’s only university for deaf students. I’ve been honored as an American Association of University Women Fellow, a Playa Residency Fellow, and a National Estuarine Research Reserve Graduate Fellow (NOAA). I’m an avid morning person, reader, cartoonist, and runner.

I studied various topics at the University of Nevada, Reno including Philosophy and Anthropology before transferring to Gallaudet University for the language support and the sense of community. My future career goal is to become an Audiologist however I am also interested in Women’s studies so perhaps I may minor in that. I’m excited to participate in this internship as I am transgender and a woman, I am thrilled to be able to create better data collection measures for other transgender people like me. Being a person living with ADHD I have a lot of hobbies, I do VCR repair currently and generally reuse obsolete technology whenever possible.

Fatuma Kuti (she/her)

I am a junior majoring in public health at Gallaudet University. I grew up in both Kenya and the U.S., and I am excited about the Belonging internship.  Even though it is my first internship, the topic is close to my heart. One of my passions and goals is to provide a service that bridges the gap in knowledge and personal health and well-being of young deaf women in developing countries. This internship fits into that area because belonging is part of well-being.  I hope through research and involvement here that it will prepare me for bigger roles in a future foundation or organization that I will set up. My hobbies include solitary walks, watching movies, and traveling to see more of the world.

Enow OTTO (he/him)

I am a sophomore attending Gallaudet University. I am studying the science of Public Health. This is my first time being part of this internship, and internships have a great door open opportunities to study and research in belonging. I am interested and looking forward to doing this research because this research helped me to understand and develop skills that employers seek. The improvement and protection of public health is my topic of study. I want to learn more about this topic and how our community can advance. My hobbies are listening to music, chilling and watching Netflix, hanging out with family and friends, playing sports, and traveling. My future goal is to be traveling nursing.

Rebecca Vides (she/her)

I am a senior attending Gallaudet University. I am studying Science of Public Health with a minor in Biology. I am interested in this research because this research falls perfectly for my major. While studying my major, I learned about health disparities, healthcare, and many more topics. My major is about protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. I fell in love with promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease, and lastly how to prevent and respond to infectious diseases. I am so excited about learning more about this research and how we can improve better as a community. Another thing about me is I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, taking pictures, creating videos, reading romance books, traveling, shopping, and going to the beach as well. Additionally, my future plans after graduation will be going to graduate school for audiology or going to medical school.
