Stereotypes are barriers to STEM careers

Our recent research suggests that students continue to hold stereotypical conceptions of scientists, and these perceptions are barriers to interest in STEM. Additionally, for women, deaf students, and students who are not science majors, seeing how science affords altruistic opportunities is important.

Non-science majors’ science identities are related to their perceptions of scientists—which continue to be primarily stereotypical conceptions.
